Why Permaculture?

Firstly, what is Permaculture?

Permaculture is the art and science of designing outdoor spaces rooted in the observation of Nature, mimicking natural processes to help build abundant, interconnected, living, healthy systems.

As a geologist, I can read the landscape and see how all these processes interact and find harmony.  This is what we are creating with every regenerative design.

Would you believe me if I said it started like this?

This is "The Greening the Desert Project" by Geoff Lawton, in Jordan

Creating an oasis in harmony with the desert ecosystem while providing nutrition to a community.

This challenging project shows what is possible when:
-bioregion specific plant species are utilized
-work to enhance living soils, capture and infiltrate water strategically, and create microclimates to provide shade from the sun and re-direct wind to protect crops and distribute nutrients
-communities are included and engaged
-the ethics and principles of permaculture in design are implemented

An interesting fact about the project was the appearance of mushrooms that had not been present for thousands of years in this area and yet the land held their memory.

Designing foodscapes, naturescapes, beautiscapes, xeriscapes, restorationscapes, any-scapes, and sanctuaries that deeply connect you and the Natural World on any scale is why Noster Nature came into being.

We design for a range of climates - dry, humid, temperate, arctic - sometimes with all four in one season making designs adaptable that evolve with the land.

This is why permaculture works - making Ancient and Indigenous knowledge new again in all places and spaces, globally.
