Apple Tree Guild from Toby Hemenway's book
Gaia's Garden
Guilds are a diverse and beneficial community of plant species and elements (rocks, bird baths, brush piles, etc) with different functions supporting a central element in a specific bioregion.
They are customized to the specific central element(s) and location as the soil, climate, topography and exposure to the elements are site specific. They can also be designed to support an ecosystem, animals, insects, your favourite natural feature, a playground, or even a dog kennel.
At Noster Nature, we have compiled lists of zone specific plants, native and cultivated, that are compatible with a variety of trees, all sourced from local nurseries. We can design a community of support plants for any trees (and central elements) to build healthy, living soil to help the trees thrive, and attract pollinators to your landscape. Noster Nature can implement the design for you or provide a list of plant species, their functions, where and how to plant them, and where to purchase them for your weekend DIY project.
